This is the book added to my wish list.  The War That Saved my Life,  has received all of the following awards as listed on Goodreads.com

Last week a few day’s after this book was recommended to me by our literature instructor the weirdest thing happened.  I looked over this book briefly in Goodreads and passed on quickly to a different area of the site.  I didn’t think any more about it until I was asked to be  a substitute in a 5th grade class where this book was laying out for an activity later in the day.  While the students were at recess I decided to pick it to find out more details of the story.  After reading the back cover I couldn’t help but read another page or so, the next thing I knew it was time to start class.  The War That Saved My Life in that class was class read 15 min everyday after lunch.  Come to find out the classroom teacher allowed a male student to pick a book based on his reading level and recent books that he had read.  I was awestruck when they entire class sat down with out prompting to listen to the story.  While reading and having an open discussion about the suffering of the two children in the book, the children in the class engaged freely and shared a few of their own experiences. I have not finished this book but even as my ‘to read’ shelf in Goodreads becomes fuller I am certain this book will stand out to me as the next read for my semester challenge.

Needless to say that day the 5th grade class read a page or 2 longer than we had time for.

    1. Ya? The 5th graders, those with learning disabilities, those without, even the English as a second language students were in tune with read. I need to remember to mention this conversation with the teacher.

  1. Wow, it looks interesting just by the title! I like the quote “finding where you belong is worth the fight,” it tells me that there will be a deeper message, so I am looking forward to seeing if you read it!

  2. I was told to read this book by one of our fellow classmates, and I think I may have to pick this one up as well. I always find myself growing a bigger and bigger list of books to read! So awesome that we get to share with each other all week! Thanks.

    1. I know I really enjoy the sharing we do each week in this class. Blogging again has been difficult for me to wrap my mind around as most new things are but I am learning this is fun as well! Have a good week and I hope your audit week goes smoothly.

  3. This sounds like a great book! And what a coincidence that you ended up reading it with a classroom of students! I’m sure it is interesting to read about a child going through wartime. I can see why school children would want to read it!

  4. I also read The War That Saved My Life during Awards Week. I really enjoyed it and had no trouble staying interested. I love that the teacher you were substituting for allowed a student to choose the book. I hope you find the opportunity to read the entire book. The protagonist in this book, Ana, reminds me a bit of Gilly Hopkins in that she is hesitant to think someone might actually want her and be willing to take care of her, and while her mother is absent or terrible (or both), she still feels the need to show her that she is worthy of her love.

  5. From what I have heard this sounds like a really good book. I might have to out this book in my wishlist for next week. Books about war are usually pretty intense and have a good story line.

  6. That is a really awesome story. You were meant to read this book! What is this book about? It is a good sign when 5th graders can’t put a book down and read more than they are supposed to. Must be a good book!

    1. Hi,
I haven’t finished the book yet. So far what I know is that is during WWII (I think)? I know for certain there are two children a brother and sister who are sent away from their abusive mother into the hands of a lady who is not financially able to easily provide for them. The girl who is the eldest has a untreated club foot. Her younger brother and her are malnourished and have not been to school.
I’ll keep you posted on more details in my blog.
