I am finding time to read by sacrificing something else.  That something else changes day to day but there is always a sacrifice.  For instance yesterday I chose to give up visiting with my husband during a beautiful Nebraska sunset.  Today I gave up time with friends, my bucket is running low in this 3 week so I needed a small dose of friends but not the extended time I am used to spending with them.

It has been difficult to find the time as I have read in other blogs.  I now carry my charged kindle with me and tap into Nebraska Overdrive it seems daily.  I have other classes that I am interested in and find that I have to set this class aside purposefully in order to honor the commitment I made to them.  Like many others I have family,  work and feel pulled in many directions.

Last week I used edge time to read, while in line I read while I waited for my turn.  I have read while my family watched a game on TV.  The bigger blocks of time that I find are the most productive for me.  I can read, comprehend and find pleasure in a story during those periods.  Those blocks of time last week were in the morning.  I hope to find time next week to sit outside in the fall weather and read.  I have also found that if I read to my grandson I have interaction time with him and get some reading done.  I hadn’t thought of how much I love that time with him, next week I will spend more evening time with him.  I am sure my daughter will love that as she will be able to get somethings accomplished of her own.  One other thing I would like to try is to listen to an audio book while exercising, I am not sure I can make that work this week but in the future maybe?

  1. I think this post summarizes the difficulties of finding balance very well! Sometimes we have to put other things aside that we want to do (like the sunset with your husband) to get done the things we have to do. I myself haven’t utilized “edge time,” is it at all useful? I also find that times I can sit down for a while and really focus have proven to be the most productive!

  2. Yes, it stinks that you have to give up something to read, but I guess we do that with other things in life. We used to listen to audio books all the time when we traveled, but it made us tired. But maybe working out and listening to it will contract each other. You will ave to let me know, but another thing I have done is listened to them on youtube.

  3. I love to hear of the ways you’re finding time to read. That edge time is so very important when we are overflowing with a million commitments. There’s only 100% of us to go around. I’m so glad to hear you are making it happen in a variety of ways!
